Rapid City is located 400 miles north of Denver, Colorado, and 570 miles southwest of Minneapolis, Minnesota.  In the 1990 census, the estimated population was 55,000.  Estimated population within a 30-mile radius is 90,000.  Recreational activities for the area include tennis, swimming, water and snow skiing, hunting, fishing, golf, soccer, and many other sports.  There are also several museums, parks, and movie theaters in which you may spend your leisure time.

The temperature in Rapid City varies significantly during the year.  The average high and low in July and August are 88oF (31oC) and 60oF (16oC), respectively.  Summer evenings are usually cool and a person needs a light jacket or sweater to ward off the chill.  January tends to be the coldest month, with an average low of 8oF (-13oC) and average high of 32oF (0oC).  Sweaters, a warm winter coat, gloves, hat, and water-proof shoes or boots for walking in snow are strongly recommended.  Rapid City does not receive a lot of precipitation, averaging only 17 inches (43cm) annually.  Some snow can normally be expected in the winter, averaging 35 inches (89cm) per entire winter season.
