The Career Service Council is pleased to announce that the March 2005 Traditions of Excellence awardee is Deb Tompkins. Deb is a secretary in the Mechanical Engineering Department. She started at Tech in May of 1988.
Her nominator(s) stated “ I have known Deb Tompkins for a number of years and I had a privilege to observe how she works and how she brings about what I consider a true and sincere care when it comes to her co-workers, students, family and friends. This character trait is precious and it cannot be learned or acquired.
As we progress through our every day lives and while facing problems that are bound to come our way, Deb is there not only to offer a comforting word but to act in order to make a difference.
It is a common practice to see that Deb is taking an active part in student advising that is over and beyond her call of duty. Such care consists of constant encouragement for continued education and to persevere. Further, Deb helps the students in obtaining and looking for scholarships and funding whenever they need help.
She makes it a point to stay in touch with as many of our graduates as possible. With these contacts Deb is always making sure that our former students do not forget their roots and still feel that they are a part of the Tech family.
With only a handful of afore mentioned facts, I am certainly not doing justice to Deb's consistent dedication, care, exceptionally good nature and spirit. However, I have touched upon points that I feel describe a person's true being.
