Essential Elements
$35.00 (U.S.) Non-refundable Application Fee. All charges are non-refundable and cannot be
waived. The application fee must be received before any action can be taken on admission.
International students should send the $35.00 by U.S. money order or a check that has the bank
routing number on it. All applicants (including students that have attended a South Dakota
state university) are required to pay the $35.00 application fee. Checks should be made out to:
South Dakota School of Mines & Technology.
Transcripts. You must provide official and complete college transcripts or other records of
previous training or experience. All transcripts and credentials become property of this college and
will not be returned to the applicant. For a transcript to be official, it must be sent directly from
the institution to the Graduate Office at SDSM&T with an official seal or stamp affixed.
The Family Educational Rights and Privacy Act of 1974, as amended, allows a candidate for admission to
waive his or her right of access to confidential letters or statements written in his or her behalf if the
recommendation is used solely for the purpose of admission and if the candidate, upon request, is notified
of the names of all persons making such recommendations in his or her behalf. The University does not
require that you make such a waiver as a condition for admission. However, under the legislation, you have
the option of signing such a waiver as follows:

Statement of Purpose. A one-page statement of purpose is required of all applicants and may be
submitted by email or post. Please include such things as your areas of special interest, your experiences
to date which helped prepare you and guided you to consider graduate school, your hopes for your future
career, etc.

The Graduate Record Examination (GRE) is required for admission to some programs. See individual program requirements for further information.
You will be notified by email and paper document if you have been accepted for admission.
At the time of notification, you will be sent a Student Health form to be filled out by your
personal physician and returned to Student Health Services. This is required for participation in
the student health service. Financial certification is required of international applicants before
a visa application will be issued.

Graduate students wishing to be considered for financial assistance must submit their application by
March 15. Target dates for International applicants are March 15 for fall and August 1 for spring.
