FREE APPLICATION for FEDERAL STUDENT AID (FAFSA)
Certain types of Federal Student Aid at most colleges and universities are limited. As a result, students and parents are encouraged to complete the Free Application For Federal Student Aid (FAFSA) as early as possible after completing their Federal Tax Returns but no sooner than January 1 prior to the beginning of the year you plan to attend the School of Mines (FOR EXAMPLE: complete the 2012-2013 FAFSA as soon as possible after completing your 2011 Federal Tax Return, but no sooner than January 1, 2012). Since students must still meet program eligibility requirements, filing your FAFSA as soon as possible after January 1 prior to the fall semester you plan to attend does not guarantee that a student will be awarded one of the limited funded Federal programs offered at the School of Mines, which are the Perkins Loan, SEOG and Work-Study programs. All other Federal Aid Programs at SDSM&T (Pell Grant, Subsidized and Unsubsidized Direct Loans, Direct Parent PLUS Loan and Direct GRAD PLUS loan) are awarded without consideration of when a student files their FAFSA prior to or during the academic year. Our school code for the FAFSA is 003470.
If you would like to view a generic presentation on how to fill out the 2010-2011 FAFSA, click here. Be sure to have your speakers on. This generic tutorial has been made available courtesy of the University of California, Santa Barbara.
Click Here to review your options for filing the Free Application for Federal Student Aid (FAFSA). You can file on line, or you can print off a PDF version of the FAFSA and mail it to the processor. Due to the speed of processing and the built-in edits that help to reduce errors, the Financial Aid Office at the School of Mines strongly encourages students to apply online at www.fafsa.ed.gov.
All students who do not have a U.S. Department of Education PIN, and especially parents of dependent students, are advised to apply for their own PIN. This will be used as an electronic signature on the online FAFSA or Renewal FAFSA. Application for a PIN for anyone who doesn't already have one is available at www.pin.ed.gov
If you have lost or forgotten your PIN, you can go to the PIN Registration site and request your PIN be sent to you again.
The tentative date for informing incoming freshman of their Federal Student Aid award is mid-April (all other students are awarded following the spring semester) and on a rolling basis thereafter. The start date for awarding may be earlier or later depending on when the South Dakota Board of Regents are able to meet following the state legislative session in order to set Tuition, Fee, Room and Board rates for the coming year. The Financial Aid Office has no control over variations in our awarding start date for the new academic year. Awards will be processed when your financial aid file is considered complete and ready for aid packaging.
International graduate students are advised to contact the Office of Graduate Education for information regarding financial assistance. International undergraduate students should contact the Academic Department at SDSM&T from which they will be receiving their degree.
In order to receive a disbursement of Federal Student Aid, students must have been fully accepted for admission to SDSM&T (non-degree seeking or what are referred to as "special" students are not eligible for any type of Federal Student Aid).
