FREE APPLICATION for FEDERAL STUDENT AID (FAFSA)

Certain types of Federal Student Aid at most colleges and universities are limited. As a result, students and parents are encouraged to complete the Free Application For Federal Student Aid (FAFSA) as early as possible after completing their Federal Tax Returns but no sooner than January 1 prior to the beginning of the year you plan to attend the School of Mines (FOR EXAMPLE: complete the 2009-2010 FAFSA as soon as possible after completing your 2008 Federal Tax Return, but no sooner than January 1, 2009). FAFSA applications that have been received by the Federal Processor on or before March 15th prior to the academic year of attendance are considered to have met the priority date for initial awarding consideration. Since students must still meet program eligibility requirements, meeting this date enhances, but does not guarantee, a student's chances of being awarded Perkins Loan, SEOG or Work-Study. All other Federal Aid Programs at SDSM&T (Pell Grant, Subsidized and Unsubsidized Stafford Loan, Parent PLUS Loan and GRAD PLUS loan) are awarded without consideration of the priority date. Our school code for the FAFSA is 003470.

Click Here to review your options for filing the Free Application for Federal Student Aid (FAFSA). You can file on line, or you can print off a PDF version of the FAFSA and mail it to the processor. Due to the speed of processing and the built in edits that help to reduce errors, the Financial Aid Office at the School of Mines strongly encourages students to apply on line.

All students who do not have a U.S. Department of Education PIN, and especially parents of dependent students, are advised to apply for their own PIN. This will be used as an electronic signature on the on-line FAFSA or Renewal FAFSA. Application for a PIN for anyone who doesn't already have one is available at www.pin.ed.gov

If you have lost or forgotten your PIN, you can go to the PIN Registration site and request your PIN be sent to you again.

The tentative date to inform new incoming freshman students and families of their fall financial aid award is mid-April. These awards will be processed when your financial aid file is considered complete and ready for aid packaging. Awarding for all other students, whether current, returning or transfer will not be processed until after grades for the spring semester are posted and Satisfactory Academic Progress has been checked.

International graduate students are advised to contact the Graduate Education & Sponsored Programs office for information regarding financial assistance. International undergraduate students should contact the College at SDSM&T that they will be receiving their degree.

In order to receive a disbursement of Federal Studen Aid, students must have been fully accepted for admission to SDSM&T (non-degree seeking or what are referred to as "Special" students are not eligible for any type of Federal Student Aid).
