Freshman Scholarships
In order to be considered for incoming freshman scholarships at the School of Mines, prospective students must have been accepted for admission no later than the first business day in February prior to the year they plan to attend. The online admission application available at http://sdmines.sdsmt.edu/apply is all that is needed for scholarship consideration. An additional option is available to students who are considering attending multiple South Dakota public universities is to file the common South Dakota Public Higher Education Undergraduate Application for Admission available at https://apply.sdbor.edu/login.cfm. Regardless of which application you submit, all incoming freshman accepted for admission will be competitively evaluated for incoming freshman scholarships.
At the School of Mines, students apply for and are awarded a scholarship without regard for specific funding sources. The Foundation Office then assigns the scholarship recipients to the individual donor funded scholarships based on their criteria.
If you are mailing the application material, it must be postmarked no later than January 25th in order to meet the scholarship filing deadline of the first business day in February. Students also have the option to FAX their application to our office at 605-394-1979; however, the FAX must reach our office no later than 4:00pm Mountain Standard Time of the first business day in February in order to meet the filing deadline.
All applicants must carefully review the admission application requirements and ensure that all required documents (including no less than an official 6th semester high school transcript or a final transcript for students that have already graduated from high school) are on file or mailed to the Admissions Office with a postmark date no later than January 25th in order to meet the filing deadline.
All students admitted as first time freshmen (including students who completed college coursework while still in high school) on or prior to the first working day in February prior to their academic year of enrollment (i.e. February 2013 for a September 2013 start), will receive an automatic award offer of $3,000 per year for each of their first two years of attendance if they meet one of the following two criteria:
Have ACT scores (or SAT equivalent scores) of both 32 composite and 32 math, or higher; or
Have an ACT score (or SAT equivalent score) of 34 or higher in either composite or math.
Recipients remain eligible to compete for award offers of greater value as noted in the next paragraph, an award of which would replace the $3000 offer, for each year for their first two years at Mines.
The SDSM&T Scholarship Committee has developed a formula that evaluates each student's ACT Composite, ACT Math and high school Cumulative Grade Point Average and ranks each student on an Order of Merit List (OML) from the highest to lowest score. A student's relative position on the OML will determine who will be offered four-year Surbeck Scholarships ($7,000 a year), four-year Presidential Scholarships ($3,000 a year), four year Distinctive Scholarships (ranging from $1,000 to $5,000 a year) and two-year Tech Challenge Scholarships (ranging from $2,000 to $3,000 a year).
Some of our scholarship donors have set up scholarships with very specific eligibility criteria. These one-year, non-renewable awards range from $100 to $2900.
If scholarship funds become available from a higher dollar amount or multiple year award due to a recipient turning down their scholarship, awardees may be "moved up" to a more prestigious scholarship as appropriate. In addition, as scholarship funds become available, students that were not selected in our initial awarding process will be reconsidered for scholarship funding and notified accordingly.
Scholarship recipients will be notified of their awards approximately the 3rd week of February. If the scholarship is a multi-year award, the award notice will indicate the criteria the recipient must meet to maintain their scholarship for subsequent years.

Current Students
For SDSM&T non-departmental scholarships awarded for the 2012-2013 school year (awards for 2011-2012 have already been determined), current students enrolled at the School of Mines will be required to complete a brief on-line scholarship application. This application will be made available prior to the start of the spring semester (look for announcements mid-fall semester) and will have a submission deadline of mid-night December 31 each year for the following academic year (i.e. December 31, 2012 for the 2013 - 2014 academic year). Further information will be made available to students via their Mines e-mail account (and possible other means such as the electronic bulletin board in Surbeck, posters around campus, etc.) prior to the application being available. Students who do not complete the application may be disqualified from being considered for any type of SDSM&T non-departmental scholarship available for continuing students at the School of Mines for the 2012-2013 school year.

Requirements for SDSM&T Scholarships
Regardless of the type of scholarship that has been awarded from the School of Mines, students must maintain full time enrollment (enroll for a minimum of 12 School of Mines credit hours each semester; there are limited exceptions that students must discuss with the Financial Aid Director), complete a minimum of 24 credit hours each academic year (fall, spring, summer) for multi-year renewable scholarships, maintain at least a 3.00 Cumulative GPA for most multi-year renewable scholarships and continuing progress toward the completion of their degree.
For students receiving multi-year, renewable scholarships, if the required Cumulative Grade Point Average (CGPA) is not maintained at the end of any year in which funding is received, future years of eligibility will be revoked; however, students will be given the opportunity to appeal for reason of extenuating circumstances.
Recipients of Non-SDSM&T and State Scholarships (such as the SD Opportunity Scholarship) are advised to review carefully the requirements of the scholarship to ensure they meet the continuing eligibility requirements.

South Dakota Education Access Foundation Grant
The mission of South Dakota Education Access Foundation (SDEAF) is to expand access to postsecondary education. SDEAF seeks to serve South Dakota students and South Dakota postsecondary institutions by promoting improvement in the rates of entry and success in education beyond high school. SDEAF will accomplish this mission by focusing on, though not limiting itself to students of low income, students facing other barriers to postsecondary education, and students from other underrepresented backgrounds.
The South Dakota School of Mines & Technology has chosen to use the SDEAF Grant to award these funds to Pell Grant eligible students that we were unable to award a Supplemental Educational Opportunity Grant (SEOG) due to lack of funding. Students are notified through the normal aid awarding process of their eligibility for SDEAF Grant funding.

Dakota Corps Scholarship Program
The Dakota Corps Scholarship Program allows South Dakota high school students financial access to an outstanding postsecondary education, while encouraging them to remain in South Dakota upon graduation working in critical need occupations. Although the School of Mines does not offer degrees in the critical needs areas, because we are an eligible participant in the program, students are able to attend the School of Mines to study in their content area and then transfer (generally after their second year at Mines) to an eligible institution that offers the required degree. You can either contact your high school counselor for application and related material, or just click here to access the Dakota Corps website.

Non-SDSM&T Scholarships
Occasionally the Financial Aid Office is notified of scholarship opportunities that are available outside the University. Information is posted in the Financial Aid Office, O'Harra Administration Building, Room 216 and is also given to each department that the scholarship may be relative to. You can also click here for information on the Honors Scholarships web page maintained by the Dean of Students office that are awarded annually from outside organizations. The site is updated as new information is received, so check for updates from time-to-time.
Students who receive a scholarship that was not awarded by the School of Mines need to provide a copy of the award notification to the Financial Aid Office so that we can properly enter the award into your Financial Aid record. The scholarship check needs to be sent to our office so that we can properly process the check and apply the funds to the student's account at Mines. Unless we have information to the contrary from the scholarship donor, checks received for less than $1000 will be processed for disbursement in 1 semester. Unless we have information to the contrary from the scholarship donor, checks equal to or greater than $1000 received prior to the start of the fall semester will be split evenly between the fall and spring semesters. Regardless of the amount, checks received for the spring semester, or for fall if the student is graduating that December, will be fully disbursed for that semester. Failure to notify the Financial Aid Office of non-SDSM&T scholarships the student is receiving may result in a partial or total cancellation of Federal Financial Aid awarded and repayment of any funds received.
Whether you want to investigate the more traditional sources of scholarships via a free internet scholarship search at fastweb.com, Mapping-Your-Future.org or maybe a career in the military with an Army ROTC scholarship, valuable information for you is just a click away.
