Financial Aid

NUMBER: III-15-1 (Formerly Policy III-5)

The Financial Aid Office will assist students in obtaining financial aid in compliance with all applicable federal and state laws, regulations, and policies governing the awarding of financial assistance.

1.                  Financial aid assistance for students enrolled at SDSM&T is administered through the Director of Financial Aid.

2.                  The Director of Financial Aid will maintain a copy of federal and state laws, regulations, and policies governing the administration of financial aid.  The Director of Financial Aid will attempt to provide the most recent applicable information governing the administration of financial aid.  The information governing the administration of financial aid is available for the review of interested persons in the Financial Aid Office or on the SDSM&T web site at www.sdsmt.edu.

3.                  Students who wish to request federal financial assistance must complete a new Free Application for Federal Student Aid (FAFSA) each year at www.fafsa.gov.  The completed FAFSA will assist the Financial Aid Office in establishing the eligibility of the student to receive federal financial aid.

4.                  The Financial Aid Office will establish the average cost of attendance at SDSM&T in accordance with federal policies and regulations.

5.                  The amount of financial assistance provided to a student will be determined by the Financial Aid Office.  Normal procedure in accordance with federal regulations will be to deduct the expected family contribution determined from the FAFSA from the established average cost of attendance at SDSM&T.

6.                  Students receiving financial assistance must report all additional aid resources to the Financial Aid Office.  The Financial Aid Office will review the funding awarded to the student and make adjustments in the current year funding award as required to comply with the federal regulations concerning authorized need for the student.
