LABORATORY ORIENTATION OUTLINE

 

 

Students are expected to read the appropriate section of the lab manual before coming to the laboratory. 

 

Test Equipment:

 

  1. Test equipment will be laid out on workbenches prior to lab testing.
  2. Equipment will be clean and in good condition before the test begins.  Be sure to leave them in same condition when leaving
  3. Check equipment before starting test.  Any damaged equipment should be reported at that time.
  4. If additional equipment is needed, ask the instructor.  Do not take anything from the shelves without permission.

 

Balances and Scales:

 

  1. Capacities are clearly marked.  Do not exceed the capacity of the scales.
  2. Be sure that scales are leveled and at zero reading before using.
  3. Never weigh anything hot.  Wait until it is cooled off.
  4. Do not mix the weights between analog scales.  Do not take any weight from other scales.

 

Oven:

 

  1. Ovens are set for a constant 110 degree C unless marked otherwise.
  2. Do not change the control.
  3. When placing samples in the oven, remove the lids so that the sample can dry.
  4. When removing samples, must wear gloves.  They are very hot.
  5. Clean the cans and return to their proper places.

 

Sink:

Do not wash the soil down the sink.

 

Testing machines:

Read the manual carefully before using any testing machine.

Be sure to clean the machine when finished.
